The Island

by Heather McCaw Kerley

Unique art|15.7 x 11.8 in

This is the first of a new series based on Shakespeare's "The Tempest." I've always been fascinated by this play, probably the last he wrote. The mysteriousness of the setting and the supernatural figures of Ariel and Caliban are especially interesting to me as an artist.

The island is a mysterious place we can only explore in our imaginations, a place of exile, survival, and plots of revenge, of imprisonment, slavery and love. It is a state of mind.

This is an original mixed media piece on paper. It incorporates collage, painting, and embroidery, resulting in an otherworldly, miniaturized view of the island in "The Tempest." The patchwork feeling of the piece is intentional and reflects the self consciousness of the play itself.
