Stigma. Kyrgyzstan is currently ranked as 136th out of 174 countries when it comes to corruption. A corruption that since the collapse of the Soviet union in 1991 has led the country through 3 voilent revolutions and is infiltrated in every aspect of the countrys administration. Mailuu-Suu was a secret city under soviet times, the first soviet nuclear warheads came from this city and a stagering 3 million tons of uranium wasterock is buried around the city – but they've never caused health issues until now. From 1991 to 2004 the city was unknown, but suddently the city found itself ranking as one of the most uranium polluted cities in the world. The reports was falsified by local and international researchers using the turmoil of the revolutions to gain personal wealth from the corruption and of the 5 Mill. USD grant from the world bank only a fraction ever reached the city. Because of this the city of Mailuu-Suu is forever stigmatized as the uranium polluted city, this stigma will and can never be erased, which is causing the city to decline. This is my story on the city and the people of Mailuu-Suu.

On the local school two boys practice for the upcoming tournament. Winning tournaments means glory and prospect to their school and families, and might even get them scholarships to get out of the city.

I am a danish documentary photographer. I am interested in people and their daily life on various places in the world. How does a nomadic tribe go about adjusting to globalwarming, or how does a city once part of Soviet Union cope with the surrounding uranium pollution and unstable economy. These types of questions are my photos about. I give voices to these people and I sell my stories and art to be able to visit more and more places and tell more and more stories. I am a VII Photo masterclass student at the moment working on a project about Vestjylland in Denmark and Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia.
