Two of our artists join forces and create this wonderful mural!

THE PROCESS:

CONTROLLED ACCIDENTS (YING AND YANG):
The painting process is a combination of order and chaos.
Firstly, the sketch shape is set by the object I am painting. However, the lines within the object are freeform and left to intuition.
Secondly, the colours are painted within the confines of the shapes, but the colours that populate these shapes are again left to chance and feelings. Thus, the balance of structure and chance lead to an outcome that is best described as a controlled accident.

How did you get interested in art?

I think art is innate. You are always interested in art if you are that way inclined. The evidence of this is when you think back to when you were a child - did you pick up a crayon, soccer ball or book?

What are your favourite materials to work with?

I’m interested in the intersection between technology and art and am experimenting the use of lasers, 3D printing and CNC routers to produce more tactile and sculptural canvases on which to paint my motifs on.

What are your sources of inspiration?

Over the years, the focus has been on finding the inspiration within myself, to enjoy the whole process and listen to the voice inside to create something that is the essence of ‘me’.

What are the best advice given to you as an artist?

Find your unique voice. Everyone else is already taken, and you don’t want your work to look like anyone else’s. So learn everything you can about art and other peoples' styles, then forget it all and develop your own genre, that comes from your inner self. Your work doesn’t have to look like what is popular or liked in order for it to be art. Remember that every great artist started off with people saying their work was bad, until their time came.

Did you attend art school or are you autodidact?

No, I don’t have any formal art education. But there are many things you can learn from life and other people.

Who are your favourite contemporary artist?

Yayoi Kusama, Olafur Eliasson, Anishi Kapoor, KAWS, Takashi Murakami

If you could not be an artist, what would you do?

Something very left brained and analytical so that the artist side of the brain can be kept free.

Where can we find you outside the studio?

Standing outside the window looking into the studio.

Describe your perfect day…

Everyday is perfect if you just enjoy the present moment, second by second.

What are your ends goals as an artist?

I am not afraid to say that end goals would be able to live a plentiful and full life through the means of art.

What 3 things would you take with you to an isolated island?

A power generator, a never-ending supply of fuel and a Virtual Reality helmet so that even though I would be stuck on the island, in my mind I could travel and do anything I want.
