Who are you?

My name is Tran and I'm a freelance illustrator and gallery artist based in Georgia. I work traditionally with acrylic snd colored pencil on paper and I've collaborated with clients such as
the Smithsonian magazine, Tiger Beer, World Wildlife Fund & VH1.

How did you get interested in art?

I drew a lot when I was a child, and it accelerated even more when my older brothers introduced Anime and video game art to me. They showed me how beautiful the world can be as a kid growing up with very little.

How would you describe your style?

My style tends to lean to the more delicate and whimsical side. It has hints of fantasy and surrealism while revolving around melancholy.

What are your sources of inspiration?

I grew up watching a lot of Anime including the Hayao Miyazaki films. I'm also heavily inspired by fashion and nature. I love capturing little nuances of everyday melancholy, whether it's my own or a stranger's.

How is the creation process for you?

Before I start, I try to meditate for about an hour and mentally prepare myself for the work day. The conceptualizing phase tends to be the most difficult part of my process and takes about a week. The painting phase is usually more steady - working with thin glazes of acrylic then colored pencil on top for fine details. Generally, it takes about 2-3 weeks to complete a painting.

What are your favourite materials to work with?

As I mentioned previously, my technique is acrylic and colored pencil, but I honestly love drawing with a plain, graphite pencil. It's what most of us grew up drawing with.

Who are your favourite artist?

There's a ton, but to narrow it down, I would say Gustav Klimt, James Jean, Hayao Miyazaki, Alma Tadema and Amano Yoshitaka.

What do you do besides being an artist?

I love biking. Hiking is something I'd love to do more of as well. I spend most of my time in the studio so going out and being with nature helps me refresh my mind.

What are the best advice given to you as an artist?

Take more risks and experiment. Stop worrying about impressing others and focus on illustrating outside-of-the-box. You can impress everyone later.
