The Golden Gown

by Hana Shoup

Portraits and art history are constant sources of inspiration for my art. Often I find paintings of beautiful women, gorgeous costumes, and luxurious environments. After researching paintings of women in art history, I juxtapose them with my own inventions. I repeat the theme of painting people in fabulous clothes, but use my own face, hands, and torso in each painting. I present myself in a classical portrait as if I can travel through time.

I was born in the small town of Brenham, Texas. I drew constantly all through childhood. Animals were my first models, both real (my menagerie of pets) and fantastic (dragons and such). As an artist, I continue this obsession with drawing. In school, I studied drawing, painting, printmaking, and art history. I love to travel, and lived for five months in Florence, Italy. There I took classes in cooking, Italian, and Renaissance art. I often combine abstraction with figuration, while my style features physical gestures, expressionist color, and ambiguous anatomy. I articulate existence as duality by drawing forms that are both representational and abstract. By making art, I create a physical record of personal expression while observing the world.
