Zil Hoque

Born India 1962, after immigrating to the UK at very young age Hoque studied at the Central Saint Martin’s School of Art, London from 1983-86 attaining a BA (hons) in Fine art Painting.
On completion of his degree, he was immediately offered his first solo show in 1987 in London’s prestigious Cork Street at the Jablonski Gallery. From this early beginnings Hoques career blossomed finally showing 20 years later with Hirschl Fine Art also based in Cork Street.
In all his work there is always the reference of Hispanic ideals and culture. As he says “the Spanish thing with me is something I can’t explain other than to say that it’s a mystical enigma.” He has always had this affinity towards the peninsular. Subjects range from the Spanish bull, horses to the colourful world of flamenco. Try as he may, the only way to exorcize himself of this fascination is to paint it! His affinity towards the medium of oil paint is seen in a strong gestural use of the brush mark and paint manipulation.
