In development for several years, the mural series were tasked with synchronizing with the heavy, raw and industrial interface of the concrete entrance halls. These murals would welcome residents home each and every day through all seasons, so it was imperative that the concept was timeless and they generated colour. Each of the murals were directly inspired by the residents themselves. During a meeting which would include all of the future residents at Tivoli, Aarhus, Mormor and Daniel van der Noon ran a brief presentation and workshop encouraging people to contribute to the content of the drawings through their own stories about Aarhus and what’s important in a city .

Mormor cityscapes
Mormor’s whimsical style lends itself to a more playful cityscape, which he has created with a limited color palette to keep the look consistent and tie the murals together. Mormor has worked with the residents in each stairway, and included their stories and ideas into the murals, making each mural unique and co-created with the residents. There are many details to be found in the murals, and even Batman has managed to make an appearance.

Daniel van der Noon cityscapes
Treating the murals as a series, Daniel worked to create definitively unique pieces, playing broadly with the themes of ‘sun’, ‘sea’, ‘city’ and ‘nightlife’. The process of integrating colour in the spaces, as well as working with the difficult surface represented new challenges. Combining acrylic paint, sealants and acrylic markers, it was possible to create surfaces that conveyed the right feel.

Daniel van der Noon strikes a fine balance between abstraction and details in his cityscapes. For this project, he chose to use strong colors and focus on landmarks. Each mural is different in terms of color but shares the same feel, tying the different murals together nicely.
