More than just a mural

Pålsson has a unique approach to every project he takes on. He’s driven by bringing history to life and letting his art tell local stories visually. Pålsson put in a lot of hours to the preplanning phase of the project where he sought out local historians to get to know about the story of the building as well as hosting a workshop for the kids in the kindergarten. The murals were made in two staircases.

A story told through images

The first murals tell the story of the house itself, how it was originally built as a vacation home for a wealthy merchant and slave trader and later became a brewery for many years before eventually being converted into a kindergarten.

The imagination of kids

The second mural staircase is based on the workshop Pålsson had with the kids in the kindergarten. At the workshop, he spread out paper all over the floor, told the kids stories of what the house had previously been used for, and had them draw freely from their imagination. These drawings were then interpreted by Thomas Pålsson and turned into the large mural spanning multiple walls.

The staircases were also outfitted with plaques telling the story of the building, giving context to the artwork. Pålssons art and methodology are deeply rooted in co-creation and so his installations are always unique to the specific project and location.
